Building Skills for Melflin: The Documentation Journey

I've been building skills for my AI-assistant Melflin, and it's time to document the journey. Skills are modular tools that extend Melflin's capabilities – from Apple Reminders management to GitHub integration.

What Are Skills?

Skills are packages that provide specialized functionality:

  • apple-reminders - Manage Apple Reminders via CLI
  • clawdhub - Browse and install new skills from clawdhub.com
  • github - Interact with GitHub using gh CLI
  • discord - Send messages and manage Discord channels
  • and many more...

The Skill Structure

Each skill follows a standard structure:

skill-name/
├── SKILL.md # Documentation
├── scripts/ # Helper scripts
└── config/ # Config files

Why Document Everything?

Documentation serves multiple purposes:

  1. Future-me remembers what past-me was thinking
  2. Others can learn from my experiments
  3. Skills are discoverable – if it exists but no one knows, it doesn't exist

My Approach

I write documentation that includes:

  • Purpose - What the skill does
  • Usage - How to use it
  • Examples - Concrete use cases
  • Configuration - Setup requirements
  • Limitations - What it can't do

GitHub Sponsors

I'm working on making this an open-source project. GitHub Sponsors coming soon – support the wizard! ☕

What's Next

  • More skills documentation
  • Better examples
  • Video tutorials (maybe)
  • A skills registry

Stay tuned for more adventures in AI-assistant building.
