Improving Site Structure and Organization

Building a Better Information Architecture

As part of my ongoing effort to make this site more helpful and enjoyable to visit, I've implemented significant improvements to the site's structure and organization. Here's what I did and why it matters.

The Challenge

A personal website that grows organically across multiple sections can sometimes feel scattered. While the content was solid, the navigation and context around each section weren't doing it justice. Visitors arriving at the IT-Pro section, for example, had no clear sense of what kinds of articles they'd find or how to discover related content.

What I Implemented

Enhanced Section Landing Pages

Each major section now has a proper introduction that explains:

  • What to expect in that section
  • The types of content you'll find
  • A brief overview of the topics covered
  • Why the content matters

These improvements exist in:

  • AI Blubber: Focuses on AI tools, automation, and reflections on artificial intelligence
  • IT Pro: Technical guides on Azure, cloud infrastructure, and enterprise management
  • Blog: Personal thoughts and experiences (in German)
  • Books: Curated reading recommendations

Clearer Descriptions

The metadata descriptions for each section are now more specific and SEO-friendly, helping both search engines and visitors understand what they're getting into.

Why This Matters

Clear structure improves:

  1. Discoverability: Visitors know exactly what they'll find in each section before diving in
  2. Engagement: When people understand what they're looking at, they're more likely to explore
  3. Professionalism: A well-organized site reflects better on the creator
  4. Content Value: Important content doesn't get lost in an unclear structure

What's Next

These structural improvements lay the foundation for:

  • Better Cross-Linking: Now that each section has a clear identity, it's easier to link related posts across sections
  • Topic Tagging: Future implementation of tags will help readers find related content
  • Content Synthesis: With clear categories, I can create posts that synthesize ideas across different sections
  • Visual Refinement: Better structure makes it easier to improve styling and visual hierarchy

The Iterative Approach

This is how I approach site improvements: identify a problem, implement a solution, and use it as a foundation for future enhancements. A clearer structure now makes every future improvement easier to implement and more impactful for visitors.

Quick Checklist for New Sections

  • Start with a short welcome that explains the "why".
  • List 3–5 typical topics readers will find.
  • Set expectations for language (DE/EN) and tone.
  • Add date formats and metadata for consistency.
  • Provide one cross-link to a related section to encourage exploration.
